Being a Soldier:
Many people have different views on whether being a soldier is helpful or hurtful to the soldier and the people around the soldier. A blogger says "patriotism is a tool used by power-hungry politicians to switch off people's brains and make them easier to control". This blog has spikes many responses. A few by soldiers themselves, upset that this blogger would go as far as to say that being a soldier is "not noble". This post by Pihwlook really puts the soldiers opinion on this anti-war/anti-soldier blog.

"I am an American soldier. I did not join to fight wars. I did not join to be perceived as noble by anyone but myself.
Until I joined, I had never fired a gun. Until I joined, I never trained in hand-to-hand combat. I never wanted to kill a person.
Now I fire a weapon periodically. I am trained in combat. I still do not want to kill a person. Someday, I might be required to - not out of personal necessity, but from an order from some old guy in Washington. And that scares the shit out of me.
But I'm in the United States Army . And when that day comes, for better or worse I'll serve this country. I'll do whatever it takes. Does that not make me courageous, even noble?

"Countries aren't people. They don't deserve loyalty or sacrifice"
America is not a piece of land. America is you. You, me, and every other American, all of whom have the freedom to denounce it as easily as you have chosen to do. The army, soldiers, me - we protect you. We fight for you. I have to kill someone I don't know for you. I live with that - for you. Whether you appreciate it, whether you realize you need it, whether you think you'd rather not need us,we are YOUR army.
Tell me you don't need me. Tell me I'm a stupid gun-touting fool. But don't say I'm not noble.
"

http://bymyart.wordpress.com/2008/07/12/macarthur-on-being-a-soldier-and-a-father
This blog on wordpress.com written by Cheryl Davis really amplifies what it means to be a soldier and a father both and many of the qualities that come with both of them.
This quote from the blog, which is quoted from a General MacArthur, really caught my attention on what it means to be a soldier and a father/mother. What does it mean, exactly? I want you to do the interpretting.
"A soldier destroys in order to build...
...The father only builds never destroys"
To be a soldier means that you have to balance everything in your life. Even children and your wife, if you have them. You could be stationed in a foreign country and not see them for months at a time, but you must fight for them, even if they are not there physically, you must always keep them in mind.

Training
Being a soldier means receiving the proper training. Each division of the military has a training program that completes their specific training.
Marines: The Crucible
For 54 straight hours, recruits’ endurance, teamwork and skills will be pushed to the limit. Through perseverance and courage, they will finish as platoons and earn the title Marine.
During The Crucible, recruits face:
  • • Obstacles that must be negotiated as a team
  • • Day and nighttime marches
  • • Night infiltration movement
  • • Combat resupply and casualty evacuation scenarios
  • • Combat field firing as a team
  • • Minimal food and sleep, simulating combat
  • • Leadership tests
  • • Core values training

Navy: Battle Stations Instead of summarizing, or at least in addition, be sure to use your own words to describe or comment on these training schedules. COnnect to your topic.
A massive 12 hour final course that wraps up everything from training. Battle stations wraps up all the training such as:
  • Swimming survival
  • Teamwork
  • Fire-fighting
  • Damage control
  • And more

Air Force: Warrior Week
Warrior week is the last week in Air Force Training and is built to show soldiers what deployment in the Air Force will be like. In recent times Air Force members are being deployed as ground troops. This could be defusing a bomb in a car to basic first aid and terrorist defense.http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0IBP/is_1_47/ai_98340656/

Effects after the War
When the war is over, some soldiers have post traumatic stress disorder. A study shown that one in ten soldiers who have suffered a traumatic brain injury were also diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder. These soldiers who have this is more likley to have comorbid depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and greater sleep disturbances.

Military Camouflage
In the time of battle, the United States use certain camouflage depending on the environment. The United States uses three different types of camouflage, woodland, desert, or digital. They even use camouflage for land vehicles, ships, and aircrafts. The purpose of these camouflages are to hide from the enemy, so they can't see where you are. It is very helpful because sometimes the enemy might not see you because they think your a leaf or part of the desert. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_camouflage

Metallica "One"
darkness imprisoning me
all that I see
absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
trapped in myself
body my holding cell

landmine has taken my sight
taken my speech
taken my hearing
taken my arms
taken my legs
taken my soul
left me with life in hell
I picked these lyrics from metallica's song one because when at war, you can feel really cared and you don't want to die, all you want to do is to come home alive. I also feel that the lyrics state different effects war can do to you. Like the injures you can suffer during war.
Marine Sniper
"Will I live?" he asked himself. "Roll Him!" two frantic vocies cried. "Quick! Roll him into the water!" Hathcock didn't know his clothes still burned.
During this part of the book, Hathcock's platoon was ambushed and Hathcock got caught on fire. I picked this quote because it show's that during a scary moment in war, some people are to scared to feel pain because he is to worried of what's going to happen next. Also considering that he was trying to help his platoon members get up.
